O2’s 2G & 3G Network Switch Off: What It Means for You & How to Prepare

Let’s talk about something that might sneak up on a lot of people: the slow goodbye to 2G and 3G mobile networks. If you’re using an older mobile phone or rely on devices that use legacy mobile tech, this one’s for you. O2 has officially announced its plan to retire 2G and 3G services in the UK, starting in October 2024 and wrapping up completely by the end of 2026. This move is all about making room for faster, more efficient networks like 4G, 5G, and beyond.

So, what’s happening?

O2 is retiring its 2G and 3G services as part of a wider industry move toward faster, more efficient 4G, 5G, and IoT-focused technologies. This upgrade frees up network capacity and paves the way for better coverage, faster speeds, and more reliable service.

Here’s the rollout timeline:

  • 1st October 2024 – O2 will stop selling 2G and 3G IoT services. We’re waiting on more info about how this will impact our Smart Mobile Data offering, and we’ll update you as soon as we know.
  • 1st October 2025 – 2G and 3G services will be shut off for inbound roaming users (with the exception of Telefonica Spain).
  • January to December 2025 – O2 will begin phased location-based switch-offs of 3G. These will be staggered throughout the year, and we’ll share location-specific updates as they happen.
  • 1st October 2026 – 2G will only be available for emergency calls and some legacy IoT traffic in areas without 4G.

Will this affect you?

It depends. If you’ve upgraded your phone or devices in the past few years, you’re probably fine. But if you’re holding onto a device that only supports 2G or 3G, or if you're using older business tech that hasn’t had a refresh in a while, you might experience:

  • Loss of mobile service
  • Poor signal or call quality
  • Unreliable data connections

In short: if you’re using outdated devices or SIM cards, you could get left behind.


Why Is This Happening?

Think of it like retiring old roads to build smarter highways. Modern networks are faster, more secure, and much better at handling today’s data demands. Retiring 2G and 3G means better performance, stronger coverage, and fewer service issues for everyone.

Plus, it's greener. Shutting down old infrastructure saves energy and allows networks to invest in more sustainable, efficient tech.


What Should You Do?

Whether you're a business owner managing hundreds of devices or just someone with an old spare phone in the drawer, now’s a good time to:

  1. Check your tech – Does your device support 4G or 5G? If you're unsure, check your phone settings or drop into your local mobile store.
  2. Upgrade devices – If you’re still using a 2G or 3G-only device, it’s time for an upgrade. There are lots of affordable options out there.
  3. Replace old SIMs – Some older SIM cards won’t support 4G/5G. Replacing them is quick and can save you a headache down the line.
  4. Enable WiFi Calling – It’s a great backup when mobile signal is weak. Most phones support it – you just need to switch it on in your settings.
